Wednesday 10th September

WED 7:00 PM BOWLING CLUB Discover Tripe
We've said it before and we'll say it again. You've got to have guts to eat tripe. The Festival traditionally kicks off the great 'Tripe Eaters Dinner' hosted by the 'old grand tripe-eating master,' himself, Russell Hannah the meal consists of a couple of varieties of the old bovine interior. You might notice the anxious looks on some of the Jamberoo cattle if you drive through the Valley before the feast cooked by our new Tripe Chef 'Rocky'. As well there will be a first course and puddin's and a fine selection of wines and ales available at the club. You will also be entertained by the 'Milthorpe Tripe Masticaters' Us Not Them, 'The Champion Tripe Chomper from Nowhere Creek', Graham Dodsworth, 'Knights Hill Tripe Gnorer' 'Larrikin Bob McInnes with his mate Alan Musgrove and North Coast Tripe Eating Champions from Byron Bay, The Hottentots. The old reprobate and Poet Laureate of the Tripe eaters Association, Blue the Shearer will also be on hand to lend the gathering an air of disrepute. If you want a feed that is not tripe then the usual 'Grey Sludge' will be provided for the lily-livered, weak kneed excuses for real people - those who don't eat tripe.
WED 8:00 PM YOUTH HALL Opening Bush Dance
An evening of Folk Dances from around the world including a number of Australian Bush dances presented by the Wongawilli Colonial Dance Club. All dances are called and musicians are welcome to sit in. Light supper and tea and coffee is available for $2.50.

THU 10:00 AM, Midday BIG TOP BHP Steel School Childrens' Concert
The acclaimed School Kids Concerts are on again this year with kids from schools throughout the Illawarra bussed in to hear some of Australia's finest performers. These include 'Magic' Mic Conway with his bag of tricks, The Hottentots with their world rhythms and renowned schools performer, Mike Jackson. The Kids from Robertson Public School will also be performing at these concerts. Kindly sponsored by BHP Steel.

THU 6:00 PM FESTIVAL PUB Aboriginal Welcome
On behalf of the traditional owners, Aboriginal elder, Uncle Rueben Brown will welcome visitors to the Jamberoo Valley. The Kemblawarra School kids will kick off the first major concert with a collage of their own original environmental songs.
THU 6:50 PM FESTIVAL PUB Welcome Concert & BBQ
The Welcome Concert says a big hello to Jamberoo and we welcome people from the village to our festival. Residents are our special guests for the night and will be free until 9pm. The concert features 'Magic' Mic Conway, Jigzag, The Hottentots, S Sorrenson, Last Band Standing, Peter Willey and The Urban Excentrics.
Come early for a family BBQ dinner with proceeds to the local school.

Local Janet Johnson will lead a 1.5km meditative walk starting at The Grove to a rainbow spiral garden. The walk will end with a performance by Noah on Singing Bowls and the tolling of a Japanese gong signifying the 19th festival.

What sort of a Nation would have a convicted murderer as it's National Hero and why did the novelist Thomas Kenneally approach the Anti-Discrimination Board and have the term "Anglo-Celtic" classified as discriminatory? Local Singer/songwriter and poet Kevin Baker draws on his experiences growing-up in Sydney during and after WW11 and looks at the discriminatory attitude to those of Irish descent that persisted in all aspects of Australian life. He draws on the songs and stories passed on to him in the oral tradition by his parents and grandparents, his own experiences in Australia and his own songs based on recollections from childhood.

With a power point presentation and his own songs Fred will examine how we interact with the stars and the way the sky has inspired us. He will prove that Mars is something more than a chocolate bar.

Leon Arundel (The Taborer) demonstrates this ancient music form. The pipe and tabor (drum) are played together which is a bit tricky but bring along your whistle and learn the secrets of this ancient art.

Musician Maurie Mulheron has just been to New York where he had lunch with the legendary Pete Seeger. Pete actually gave him an unrecorded song. Maurie wrote and performed in that great musical about Pete's life - 'One Word We' which played at theatres and Folk Festivals last year. Maurie is going to talk of his lunch and sing Seeger songs. He is being helped by Margret Roadknight and Jeannie Lewis.

Undiscovered talent is the future of the Festival. A selection of performers who are breaking into the Festival scene. You may not have heard of many of them now but you will in the future. The concert is hosted by Folk Alliance guru and and folk booking agent, Jim Macquarrie. The 1950's were the era of greasy hair (Brylcreem), 'cool' young men (Bodgies) and rippled-soled Desert Boots (Brothel Creepers). These items along with Elvis, Buddy and Little Richard were the folkloric beginnings of Rob Willis as a young Bodgie in Forbes. Join Rob and Mark Willis, Rob Scotton, Christina Mimmocchi, Miguel Heatwole, Touchwood, and the Illawarra's answer to Elvis Presley and the Jordanaires - Eggbert Pullet and the Jamberoosters. SAT 2:00 PM RSL HALL One Last Dance - A Story of the Titanic
Everyone knows of the Titanic because of the various movies and TV shows about the disaster. But there is a different story that the TV and Movie doesn't tell. It's the story of a precocious Welsh lad Archie who heard the whole sorry saga on his amateur radio but no one would believe him. This is a true fascinating story told in song and words by renowned Welsh storyteller Phil Thomas.
SAT 2:00 PM SCHOOL OF ARTS Dances for Dancers
This workshop with Darryl and Diana Powell with music from Mulligan's Flat is for people with some dance experience, who are looking for something different and would like the chance to do some of the more interesting dances rarely done at folk festivals. Knowledge of the common rhythms and formations would be useful.

A chance to learn some common session tunes at a more relaxed pace with The Railway Session players.
SAT 2:00 PM YOUTH HALL Alan Scott Memorial
Alan Scott was one of the icons of the Folk Scene. Collector Performer, Folklorist, Busker', Songwriter, he attended every one of our festivals up to the time of his death. Since then we have held an annual memorial concert devoted to traditional Australian Culture This years line-up includes Phyl Lobl, John Dengate, Alan Musgrove and Bob McInnes, Us Not Them, the Bush Music Club and is hosted by Dale Dengate.
SAT 2:10 PM MARQUEE VOX FM Concert
Vox FM is our local Community Radio Station and hosts the weekly Folk radio programme. The concert showcases some fine musicians in Judy Pinder and Luke O'Neill, our own award winning band Wongawilli, Dave Steel from Melbourne, Hungarian Group the Transylvaniacs, outstanding young duo Us Not Them and Walters and Warner with band.

SAT 4:15 PM YOUTH HALL The Creation of the Universe
A play by Blue the shearer, taking a serious look at the history of the Universe, from the Big Bang Theory to the Tele Tubbies. Some well known Folkies are taking part, but they will not meet each other until the actual day of the performance. The dangers of over rehearsal have hopefully, been avoided. What is certain is the appearance of Dr Fred Watson, Astronomer in Charge of the Sidings Springs Observatory, Coonabarabran as a special guest artist. As is the case of all Blue the Shearer's plays, this one is thought provoking, challenging, touching on social matters, and having a deep philosophical base. You might find such notorious characters as Chris Wilson, Rob Willis, Bernard Carney, David Meyers, Touchwood, Us Not Them and others skulking around as actors in this performance.

Listen to yarns from Australian champion John 'Tractor' Rennick and Reg 'Rabbits' Hodge. Reg will be bringing some rabbit traps for the unruly.

Up Close with Jigzag who have a huge following - a chance to catch them away from the main stage.

SAT 5:30 PM THE GROVE Dusk Festival Parade
A highly audible and colourful experience led by the NSW Irish Pipe Band followed by musicians, performers of all kinds. The procession will will around the Park and up to the main street and back.

The NSW Irish Pipe Band provides a performance to wake the dead for a big night out in Jamberoo with a swag of Irish melodies.

If you're into the music that makes your body want to move then this concert is for you. Kick off with the mystical rhythms of The Gypsy Flames Belly Dancers, exhaust yourself with the wild drumming of Obrobini, get your blood flowing with the Latin Beat of Andean Dreams followed by the Celtic reels of Spoot O'Skerry. If you're not exhausted the vagrant rhythms of Counterfeit Gypsies, the ever popular Big Snore Hammers and the sheer force of Psycho Zydeco should satisfy any lingering craving for dancing.

Big Folk Night Out is a full-on Pub Concert with eight big bands. Hear Psycho Zydeco, Juniper Fare, Paul Greene, Broderick Smith and band, The Transylvaniacs, Glenn Skuthorpe and Band, The Urban Excentrics, and Jigzag.
SAT 6:00 PM MARQUEE Trad&Now Discovery
The only exclusively Australian Folk Magazine on the market is 'Trad and Now' edited by Festival director Dave De Santi. This concert features Aisling Gheal, the up and coming Tinkershuffle, Kavisha Mazzella, Akin, The Poachers, Michael Fix, The Hottentots and Neil Adam and Judy Turner and band.
SAT 6:00 PM YOUTH HALL The Soup Kitchen
Saturday Night at The Youth Hall is Soup Kitchen Time. The soup is provided by raconteur, poet, bon vivant and soup chef, Arch Bishop. While you're sipping your soup you can listen to Loaded Dog, Mike Jackson, Vardos, Graham Dodsworth, Myriad, Merri-May Gill, Lonnie and Helen, Dave Steel, Dominique Fraisard, Touchwood, Frencham and Smith and go till after midgnight with Desert Child.

Jim Williams leads a song session focusing on songs of the environment.
SAT 7:00 PM SCHOOL OF ARTS Big Festival Dance
Once again features the largest acoustic dance band in Australia with a selection of accordions, banjos, fiddles, whistles, pianos, percussion instruments of all types. They provide the music for a number of dances from a variety of callers and styles.
SAT 7:30 PM BOWLING CLUB Saturday Bluegrass
Saturday Bluegrass in the Bowling Club. Join Acoustic Shock, Department of Bluegrass, Crazy Creek and Dogwater in the ever-popular Bluegrass Night. Get there early as this one packs out.
SAT 7:30 PM RSL HALL Songs of Great "Granma and Granpa"
You'll need your singing voice for this one as host, Duncan Chalmers takes us through some of the songs that Great Granma and Granpa sang. Duncan will be helped on his way by some festival singers like Alan Musgrove and Bob McInnes, Rob Willis and Friends, Mike Jackson, Bernard Carney, Us Not Them and others. There'll be a cheat sheet of choruses and you'll be surprised just how many of these century old songs that you know.

Pub Folk features three great bands in the Jamberoo Pub. Settle down in the cosy warmth of the pub, enjoy the hospitality of Jamie and Ross Warren and hear Spoot o'Skerry, Last Band Standing and the Zarsoff Brothers.

It's happy birthday to the strongest provincial Labour Council in Australia. The Council turns 75 years this week and has a proud history of defending workers rights. From Pig Iron to Japan to Workers Compensation, from supporting Indigenous peoples rights to peace and support for refugees, the Labour Council has been a beacon of light in the Illawarra. Organised by Mairi Petersen the concert will feature The Union Singers, Maurie Mulheron, John Dengate, We Have Issues, Walters and Warner, Bernard Carney, Mark Gregory, Pat Craigie, Kevin Baker and others.

Eirwen Malin and Phil Thomas from Wales present the dance and music for two traditional Welsh dances. One is the 'Flirtatious' Court Dance and the other a fair dance. Eirwen will be the Dancemistress and teach the dances while Phil will run a parallel workshop for any interested musicians who might like to try playing for the dances. At the end of the workshop they will put the two together for a 'performance'.

Mike Jackson, multi-instrumentalist, has the kids jumping, singing and being folk performers.

A chance to find out about the 2nd Jamberoo Valley Folk Music School to be held in July 2004 following this year's successful school. Jane Brownlee, Director, will be there along with some of the tutors. Classes on offer include accordion, fiddle, singing, whistle, guitar and fun. Also a chance for students to reunite and reminisce.

Solo singers, instrumentalists and speakers take you on this journey.

The Folk Alliance is the umbrella body that covers the Folk Movement in Australia. Say goodbye to the Big Top with some of the Festivals most popular performers. Pastance, Akin, Margaret Roadknight Bernard Carney and the Festival Choir, Dogwater and Vardos will conclude the 19th Festival and get you eager for the 20th.

All Over Australia Concert to finish our series of concerts in the Marquee featuring performers from every state except Tasmania. You can hear the Shoalhaven Youth Orchestra with Wongawilli (NSW of course); Neil Adam, Judy Turner and their band from Victoria, also from Victoria, Broderick Smith and Vardos; Loaded Dog and Desert Child and from Western Australia; Juniper Fare from South Australia and Lonnie and Helen from Queensland join Glen Skuthorpe from NSW to complete a great concert line-up.

Geoffrey Graham with, among other things, this most loved of Banjo Patersons Poems. The kids love it especially when they get to act it out.
SUN 3:00 PM BOWLING CLUB Tribute to Australian Songwriters
Graham Dodsworth, one of Australia's finest students of Australian traditional music pays tribute to songwriters known and unknown. He's a great singer as well.
SUN 3:00 PM SCHOOL OF ARTS Polkas and Mazurkas 
The hit dances of western Europe in the mid nineteenth century, the polka and the mazurka, made the leap from the peasant frolics to the formal ballroom. Darryl and Diana Powell and Mulligan's Flat let you dance them in both peasant and ballroom style. These dances are easy and suitable for all levels of experience.
