About the school

The Illawarra Folk Club Inc has been presenting the Illawarra Folk Festival at Jamberoo since 1985 and has provided much enjoyment to performers and audiences.

The Jamberoo Valley Folk Music School was first held in July 2003 and is a new iniatitive to further nurture and develop folk musicians.

The School is a great opportunity to learn about folk music with some of Australia’s premier folk performers and teachers.

At this stage the classes will be in fiddle, guitar, whistle, accordion, concertina and voice.

In addition to classes there will sessions, extra music focus sessions, concerts, dances and a good social time while developing musical skills.

How it works

The School is scheduled in the 1st week of the NSW school holidays in the beautiful rainforest environs of the Jamberoo Valley Lodge, 10km inland from the seaside town of Kiama on the South Coast of NSW.

Students will arrive from Wednesday afternoon, check into the accommodation at the Jamberoo Valley Lodge and head out to the Wongawilli Community for a barbecue dinner and bush dance.

The following days will include intense classes from highly skilled performers with various activities in the evenings: Thursday - session, Friday - folk dance band with participation encouraged, Saturday - concert. The School will finish with a Finale Concert at the Jamberoo Pub with a lunch.

There will be additional opportunities to learn tunes, songs and musical styles in a more social atmosphere in the afternoons.
