About the Festival

The Illawarra Folk Festival has been held annually in since 1985 and is one of NSW's premier music festivals and a major multi cultural event for Australia organized totally be volunteers.

Home to the Festival is the City of Wollongong, one of the most culturally diverse communities in Australia with many of its residents born outside Australia and with many languages other than English spoken in the home.

Cultural activities have produced a vibrant artistic community and the Illawarra Folk Festival has showcased them since the beginning.

The Festival was held in the village of Jamberoo for 20 years but moved to Bulli in the northern suburbs of Wollongong in 2006.

    Tourism Grant Announced, 4 October

    Matt Brown, Minister for Tourism, announced that the festival has been given financial assistance from the Arts 2008 Regional Flagship Events Program.

    Illawarra Folk Store Launched, 23 October

    The Illawarra Folk Club now has a fully operational On-lIne Store where you can purchase Festival and other event tickets, local performers CDs and books. Click here to go there.

    Global Green to continue

    The multicultural aspect of the Global Green stage will continue with the kind support of Illawarra Ethnic Communities Council. A specially designed dance stage will again be constructed in the Scandinavian outdoor style.

    Folk Summer School
    16 and 17 January 2008 at Bulli

    A great introduction to Folk Music, Tunes, Instruments and Musical Creativity.  It's an action packed two days with a variety of tutors and a chance to be part of the Festival's Italian Lunch Concert! Presented by the Illawarra Folk Club Inc in a long continuing tradition of providing folk music tuition, awareness and opportunities to musicians and singers. There will be around 15 to 20 sessions with various tutors including some of ther performers coming to the festival. Each tutor will provide a session on their subject during the day from 9am to 4pm. Instrumental students will learn an Italian tune to perform at the Festival Italian Lunch to be held in the Bulli Showground Grandstand Restaurant on Thursday 17 January 2008.     Folk Music Scholarships
     
    The Illawarra Folk Club is extremely proud and excited to announce 20 scholarships for the 2008 Illawarra Folk Festival Music School. The scholarships will cover the cost of attending the School and 1 Family Season pass to the Illawarra Folk Festival - worth $250. Entries close 30 October. More details.
